Wonderful so far
I've only just started reading the book, and I can't hardly put it down. I've met the author(Crystal) and John and they are really nice. I highly reconmend the book.

I almost cried, when I got to the chapter when John found out that Dale had died in a race.

West Virginia Narrow Gauge Mann's Creek Railway
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (April, 1999)
Authors: Ron Lane and Ted Schnepf
Average review score:

Excellent resource for rail buffs and model railroaders
This is an extraordinarily thorough exploration of the life and times of a little narrow gauge railroad that hauled both coal and lumber during its long history. The authors take us on a delightful trip over the entire railroad, with text and map references that are well coordinated. The book includes a profusion of scale plans: two enginehouses, the Clifftop company store, the line's funky caboose, coal hoppers, a trestle, a truck-to-rail coal tipple, and other structures. Particularly useful to modelers are the photos, which include unusual pictures like much of the inside of a coal hopper. Though corporate histories can be dull, the historical portion of the book is captivating. We share the consternation of early entrepreneurs who unexpectedly ran out of coal reserves at the New River Gorge just as demand was skyrocketing: Fortunately for them and for us, the answer was coal just a few miles away and in between the Mann's Creek Railway. The authors invested thousands of hours creating this well written and profusely illustrated account. It sets a very high standard for railroad publishing. Buy this one!

Whatever happened to the Jesus Lane lot?
Published in Unknown Binding by Inter-Varsity Press ()
Author: Oliver R. Barclay
Average review score:

Global mission vision of students and the history of CICCU
Any student that leads a Christian campus ministry needs to get their hands on this book. It tells the tales of how Cambridge students were instrumental in volunteering for overseas missions, particularly when large missionary societies like the China Inland Mission and Church Missionary Society were just getting going.

It is the history of a forerunner to Inter-Varsity - CICCU - the Cambridge Inter-collegiate Christian Union - it covers the years from 1877-1977.

Oliver Barclay has done an excellent job in providing references. The paperback cover has a drawing of several Christians including one that looks suspiciously like John Stott - the Rector Emeritus of All Souls Church - one of London's premier evangelical worship places. It is people of this calibre that came out of CICCU and that Oliver Barclay writes about so well.

Who's Gonna Change, James

Compelling Portrait of Difficult Time
This book really touched me. I lived through the period described in this book--granted, not as a doctor but as a lawyer. Those who were not there will never understand what it was like; I now reject most of the viewpoints and understandings I embraced at the time. I was wrong more often than I like to admit. This book effectively shows how the process of growing in a profession (or in life) can transform the way you approach everything else. The stories of the long hours and terrifying situations faced by these young interns really inspires respect.

Why Does God Allow War?
Published in Paperback by Crossway Books (April, 2003)
Authors: David Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, John MacArthur, and Lane T. Dennis
Average review score:

Short, simple, solid.
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones does a good job explaining (biblically) why God allows suffering, and in particular why God allows war. This book was not written to answer sceptics, but rather to answer from scripture those who love God, and sincerely want to understand why God allows war.

I thought this book did a great job answering the question.

Why We Must Run With Scissors: Voice Lessons in Persuasive W
What do overworked, frazzled English teachers need more than June, July and August? This book. Why We Must Run With Scissors is a practical, usable book filled with ideas that beg to be used by real kids in a real classroom. They were written by a real teacher who has used them, perfected them and presented them in one of the most user friendly formats I have encountered in years. While this book is touted as a writing text, it is really a literacy text because it is filled with reading, writing, connecting and extending ideas. I love this book, and I would recommend it to any teacher who wants to bring joy and laughter back to the teaching of reading and writing.-

Makes You Want To Jump Up and Cook!
My highest accolades go to cookbooks that make me want to run into the kitchen and cook before I have even finished reading them. This book is one of the best examples of that inspiration! The recipes are homey, yet sophisticated, using common ingredients as well as more exotic ones such as celeriac and gobi (burdock). The barley and hazelnut pilaf that accomapnies roast beef is superb! Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Then pull it out each November and fall in love with the recipes all over again!

Word Biblical Commentary Vol. 47a, Hebrews
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (11 November, 1991)
Author: William L. Lane
Average review score:

The Best Detailed Work on Hebrews
The late Dr. William L. Lane provided us with the most detailed work on Hebrews ever produced. It is very satisfying that this great work is from a solidly evangelical perspective. The introduction is magnificent. The work is technical and detailed, yet it is quite lucid for the informed layperson. If you at least know the Greek alphabet and can use an interlinear, you can follow the exegesis with great benefit. It is a goldmine for Greek students, pastors and teachers. This is the best work available on Hebrews.
